To support clinical teaching and service in the curriculum and public practice of the College of Veterinary Medicine Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Individuals must possess the knowledge, as well as the following skills and abilities or be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
1.
College Degree or any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the job.
A current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License is required.
2.
Ability to read and write medical records and recommendations.
3.
Ability to calculate client’s bills, drug dosages, and dilutions.
4.
Ability to teach students in technical skills.
Ability to supervise veterinary students and decide if intervention is required for the safety of students and/or nonhuman animals.
Must possess the knowledge and ability to fairly evaluate and document veterinary student’s clinical/surgical skills.
5.
Ability to restrain, handle and perform a physical exam on a variety of animal species.
Broad species experience is desirable.
6.
Knowledge and enthusiasm for small animal preventative care recommendations (including nutrition, dentistry, behavior, and immunizations), veterinary medical terminology, veterinary medical procedures, surgical nursing, and basic sanitation and upkeep of veterinary medical equipment and environments.
7.
Ability to perform a variety of basic veterinary office procedures.
8.
Ability for logical, independent problem solving, and attention to detail and process.
9.
Must be able to interact effectively with administration, faculty, staff, students, clients and outside visitors/vendors.
10.
Ability to use computers for Internet searches and for Excel, Word and PowerPoint documents.
- Familiar with hospital settings, flow and dynamics - Proficient monitoring general anesthesia with normal healthy patients, including working with various monitoring equipment - Knowledge in placing IV catheters - Knowledge of administration of IV, IM and SQ injections - Ability for logical, independent problem solving, and attention to detail and process - Knowledge in proper restraint and handling techniques - Can perform routine dental prophys - Can perform routine lab work and diagnostics - Dispensing medications - Knowledge of surgery instrumentation - Multitasking two to three things at a time with organizational skills Required Qualifications Education: - Completion of a degree from RVT school - RVT License in the State of California Experience: - 1-5 years of experience in general practice - Must have a valid Driver’s License - Must maintain a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) that satisfies the requirements of the WesternU Vehicle Use Policy.

Percentage Of Time 20 Job Duties Participates in the development and implementation of clinical services by performing the technical and nontechnical duties typical of a registered veterinary technician within the Pet Health Clinic, VACS I and VACS II – veterinary ambulatory community service units, 1st and 2nd year clinical courses, 3rd year Small Animal Medicine, Shelter Animal, and Surgical courses and 4th year clinical courses.
(Nontechnical duties could include driving a mobile vet vehicle(s).
) Percentage Of Time 20 Job Duties Assist with client service and patient care in the involved courses, rotations, and public practice.
Percentage Of Time 10 Job Duties Support faculty with technical and nontechnical skills, administrative needs, preparation and planning where needed in the involved courses, rotations, and public practice.
Percentage Of Time 10 Job Duties Assist with cleaning, proper disinfecting for infection control, and organization of the CVM facilities, where the rotations, courses, and public practice occur.
Percentage Of Time 10 Job Duties Participates in the production and implementation of the clinical skills curriculum.
Assist with preparation and oversight of pet volunteers and laboratories, setting up and cleaning up laboratories.
Maintain inventory and equipment.
Percentage Of Time 10 Job Duties Act as an expert resource for tasks typically performed by a Registered Veterinary Technician.
Percentage Of Time 10 Job Duties Participates in veterinary and education research as needed by the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Duties of the Veterinary Technician are normally performed in a veterinary clinic/hospital, laboratory or animal shelter setting.
While performing in these settings, the employee is exposed to owned, rescue and shelter animals, anesthetic gases, and other substances (antiseptics, cleaning solutions, pharmacological drugs) used in animal care.
Occasionally the employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
The noise level in this setting is usually moderate due to telephone calls, office equipment, animal noises, and normal student traffic.
There is a moderate exposure to toxic chemicals and fumes.
There is a slight potential for electrical shock and risk of radiation exposure.
