The City of Pasadena Public Works Department is seeking a strong leader with a customer focus mentality and excellent organizational skills to plan, coordinate, supervise, and direct, through subordinate supervision, the work performed by crews assigned to complete activities in the installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC systems, building automation systems (BAS), and plumbing and fire sprinkler systems.
IDEAL CANDIDATE Under general direction, the ideal candidate will take the initiative to manage conflict within the work group and plan, coordinate, design, and supervise maintenance, repair, inspection, installation, and modifications to the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, (HVAC), sheet metal, and plumbing systems.
The incumbent must possess the functional knowledge necessary to understanding challenges related to historical preservation, building codes and requirements, fire life, and safety.

Supervises and determines utilization of personnel, equipment and materials; assigns personnel to work crews in line with changing priorities of projects and City needs; evaluates work methods and operations; plans and schedules section activities; evaluates section policies, procedures, and services to determine effectiveness, makes changes to increase effectiveness to meet departmental objectives; periodically inspects job sites to insure compliance with building codes, City standards and safety regulations.
Coordinates training and evaluates employees; takes necessary disciplinary actions; selects staff; schedules vacations and time off requests; inspects and approves timecards for proper allocation of time.
Assists in developing long-range and short-term division objectives and preventative maintenance programs; prepares billing, financial analysis and service objective reports; develops plans to meet future service needs; prepares section budget and control expenditures of allocated funds.
Prepares estimates, orders supplies and materials and monitors construction, maintenance, and/or operating costs; develops and prepares bid specifications for large purchases and contract services; oversees contractors and administers service contracts.
Coordinates maintenance unit activities with those of other units, divisions, and outside agencies and organizations; meets with representative of City departments to ascertain equipment and maintenance needs; resolves sensitive and controversial issues.
Reviews, evaluates and implements required inspection and maintenance programs to ensure regulatory compliance; works with State and local inspection agencies for permitting and certification.
Maintains records in the form of work logs, blueprints, drawings, sketches, plans and specifications, using traditional and electronic media tools and techniques.
Investigates complaints related to area of assignment; initiates appropriate action; investigates and prepares incident reports; provides necessary follow-up action.
Organizes, schedules and coordinates training sessions and safety meetings including CPR, first aid and emergency preparedness classes for the department.
Responds to and directs the work of employees involved in emergency responses to major storms, hazardous material spills, and other emergency situations; develops emergency response procedures.
May act on behalf of the division head.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Prior experience in supervising and coordinating activities of personnel involved in the installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC systems, BAS, and plumbing and fire sprinkler systems is preferred and will be factored into the initial screening Prior experience in other trades is desirable Supervisory project management experience Public sector experience Lucity experience (electronic work order system software) SELECTION PROCESS The selection process will consist of an evaluation of training and experience and the most qualified candidates may be invited to participate in a written, oral, and/or performance examination and a department-level interview.
VACANCIES The current vacancy is in the Building Systems and Fleet Management Division of the Public Works Department.
As a result of the recruitment process, an eligible list will be established which will be used to fill this vacancy and other similar vacancies that may occur in the future.
Candidates selected for this position are subject to a one-year probationary work period.
Special Requirements Must have or obtain a Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record at time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.
Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.
5% @ 55 benefit formula.
All employees are required to pay the full employee contribution to CalPERS.
