The City of Pasadena's Office of the City Attorney/City Prosecutor is seeking a Deputy City Attorney in the Prosecution Division to represent the People of California and Pasadena in superior and appellate courts.
The ideal candidate will prosecute jury and court trials and represent the People in misdemeanor cases without court-room supervision.
The ideal candidate will take initiative and work independently in coordinating the review and disposition of cases, interviewing victims and witnesses, appearing in court, and representing the People of the State of California.
There is currently one Full Time, Limited Term/Grant Funded position.
This position focuses on criminal cases where the defendant has a history of criminal activity.
The goal is to have defendants accepted into the grant program work with a case management service provider that considers mental health issues, substance abuse, housing needs, life skills, and reintegration into society with job training and placement.
Although this position involves being responsible for the grant program, the position also includes traditional prosecutorial work, such as reviewing and filing cases, providing discovery, and handling cases in court for arraignment, pretrial, motions, and jury trials.

Reviews law enforcement reports and cases to determine whether to file, reject, or to refer for an office hearing or mediation in order to gain compliance with state and municipal laws by settling disputes out of court.
Implements office policies and procedures relating to the disposition of cases.
Reviews criminal misdemeanor cases; researches, reviews, and drafts appellate briefs.
Interviews victims and witnesses; represents the People in arraignments and pretrial conferences.
Conducts court hearings, trials, motions, and restitution hearings.
Responds to inquiries from criminal defendants, witnesses, police and other attorneys.
Researches legal issues and provides legal opinions and advice to law enforcement personnel.
Trains law enforcement personnel on developments and effective prosecution techniques.
Assists other prosecutors in all phases of legal work on the more complex cases; attends meeting where prosecution matters are discussed.
Handles special projects as assigned.

The City Attorney/City Prosecutor's Office anticipates requesting that this position be converted into a regular full-time Deputy City Attorney (Prosecution Division), position once grant funding ends.
However, there is no guarantee at this time that this will happen or of continued employment after September 30, 2024.
The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future.

Special Requirements Active membership in the California State Bar.
Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.
Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS’ reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.
5% @ 55 benefit formula.
All employees are required to pay the full employee contribution to CalPERS.
