Controllers is the largest division of the Finance department, and we pay the bills, close the books, provide earnings, deliver analysis of critical transactions, and explain accounting concepts company-wide.
Position Overview: The Senior Manager Technical Accounting and SOX Governance position is in the Technical Accounting & SOX Governance group within the Controller’s Department of Southern California Edison (SCE).
You will lead a group of professionals focused on providing technical accounting interpretation and implementation guidance associated with accounting standards.
The position requires a detailed knowledge of U.
S.
Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) in areas such as: debt, equity, leases, revenue recognition, derivatives and variable interest entities.
Typical responsibilities include: Planning, interpreting, and implementing new accounting standards for the Company Monitoring and assessing developments at the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), U.
S.
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and other regulatory bodies, such as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in order to determine which guidance will impact the Company Evaluating impact associated with the guidance and communicating the impacts to senior management and key personnel Managing, training, and developing team members by providing timely feedback, coaching and support.
Creating a leadership path to include employee development, talent and succession planning.
Manages the process design, documentation, and continuous improvement of the technical reporting function Analyzing transaction documents and resolving accurate accounting treatment Reviewing details of significant or complex accounting matters and determining accounting impact of those transactions on the Company’s financial statements Supporting the external financial reporting team in preparing quarterly and annual reports filed with the SEC Supporting ad-hoc projects related to technical accounting and financial reporting Responsible for overall financial risk assessment to identify key Internal Control over Financial Reporting (ICFR) risks and mitigation strategies necessary for a compliant enterprise environment Partner with various stakeholders and help design /modify controls for changes to business processes and systems (including adoption of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) solutions), as well as new accounting pronouncements Oversee ongoing monitoring and testing (in partnership with Internal Audit) of internal controls to ensure the Company’s internal controls are designed and operating effectively Work with process owners to evaluate and assess deficiencies across the enterprise, communicate findings and drive remediation efforts Train process and control owners on their responsibilities related to SOX Manage enterprise-wide quarterly SOX certification process Qualifications The essentials: 5 or more years' management experience in the field of accounting Strong technical and general accounting knowledge and ability to research FASB, SEC and other accounting literature Experience in managing internal control over financial reporting for a publicly traded company Professional accounting qualification (CPA or international equivalents) active or inactive The preferred: Bachelor's or higher degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or related field 3 or more years' experience in a public accounting firm (preferably with a Big 4 firm) with large SEC clients Strong quantitative and analytical skills combined with proven business and financial understanding Strong technical accounting ability to research utility-industry accounting literatures, such as FERC guidance and FERC orders Problem solver with a natural curiosity about complex matters Positive relationship building skills and a highly professional “client service orientation” Proactive teammate who possesses the interpersonal and organizational skills to connect with key personnel throughout the company Experience in evaluating contracts for identification of unique or complex accounting implications Experience in energy/utility industry Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate accounting issues and business processes with all levels of management Strong work ethic, leadership, and interest in continuous learning You should know: This position’s work mode is hybrid.
The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days.
Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California.
